Novice Magazine

Overview
Novice is an e-zine inspired by the Lasallian community and revolves around the student lifestyle. The word “novice” is synonymous to an apprentice or freshman, which is associated with students who are still learning their way into the world. The target audience for this e-zine is the Lasallians in Manila Campus, since the content will be contextualized to them.
Design Process
Since I was a student at De La Salle University, it was easier to capture the student vibe and campus atmosphere.
Colors — The main color was green, which is the school colors of De La Salle University. Luckily, money or finance is also associated with the same color.
Fonts — The main header was Times New Roman because this serif font fits into the traditional school and high-end feeling when speaking of finances. Furthermore, Novice was meant to be empowering the students as apprentices for the real world. The body text used Helvetica Neue since it had easy readability on screen and several variations, which is more than a stylistic choice but a practical one.
Layout — A clean layout was necessary to maintain the seriousness of the financial aspect. The page spread had elements of minimalism, yet the images and visual hierarchy was able to maintain the balance between being bland and being clean.
Images — Adding images to the layout made the pages more vibrant which maintained the attention of the reader. Inputting them in the middle connected the two pages and made them more dynamic. Also, I wanted to be selective with the photos, and avoided the generic stock images. Low quality and cliche images can impact the ambience of the e-zine.

Note: Novice was a project for a Creative Non-fiction course done individually. This was an interdisciplinary project that included journalism, research, and graphic design.
